It depends. If you have an eye and interest in visually appealing things then you would just need the basics. Color theory, design elements, art history, a little math, business procedures (how to run your own business) and most importantly, print and or web applications (illustrator, photoshop, freehand, flash, dreamweaver, blah blah whatever the hiring companies require.)
I have a BS in graphic design. i didn't get a job in my field for 3 years. Life taught me how to be better in time management and now I work 3 hours a day at a digital print shop and come home and do some freelance work for this company that creates web based e-learning programs for hotels such as the Hilton and Choice Hotels.
Ask yourself: Do you have the drive, motivation? Do you want to put in long hours of computer time for little to no pay?
If you decide to go to school, Look at careerbuilder or elance.com and see what customers want. Then find out what equipment you will need to do all of this. The cheapest and most cost effective way is to have a laptop with the required software and do the web. no printing drama. but if you like print, understand the different print techniques: screen printing, offset, digital, blahblah.
Just make sure you don't slack off and procrastinate when hitting a deadline.

in my case it took 5 years of college to get my degree and a lot of experience out even when you can get the degree in many technical schools I really encourage the professional level because you will need all the references that just college can give you
