Listen, your laptop has onboard wireless, right? Well, that onboard wireless is a "wireless adapter" which receives and sends signals to and from the router, which receives its connection from the modem. Once you purchase a wireless adapter from an electronics store or online store you run the software, then when instructed plug in the adapter. After you plug in the adapter you type in the password for your Routers encryption, if any, (you should ALWAYS use encryption!) and then click on the Connect button.
Here is some resources for you to read and review:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/default.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/wifi/default.mspx
The first link is for beginner's and the second is for those a bit above beginners, bookmark them or put them into your favorites in order to access them easily and get your network up and running. Now, as you are going wireless, just click onto any link which supports that configuration and you will be good to go. Look around these sites and you will discover many other links which will be of assistance to you.
Good luck and have a great day!
