Ok it's no secret that most of our programming in Australia comes from America, and something that I've noticed and always wanted to know was: When you talk on the phone, do you just hang up at the end of your sentences, like "ok honey, I'll be home late", then they both hang up without saying goodbye, like in the middle of the sentence. How do you know if you've both stopped talking, presuming you do do that, Do you lot do that, or is that just a film thing?

LOL...I am not sure if some do...but I can tell you that I have worked answering the phone and have a huge family who loves to talk on the phone and we never just hang up without saying goodbye. I even say goodbye when I leave a message...like you I would not be sure the person was done talking.

Sometimes, yes. I hardly say goodbye to my intermediate family because usually my calls to them means they are picking me up and I will be seeing them in a few minutes anyway. I don't know it's weird. For my family (I live at home, I'm in high school) I just say "Okay" and hang up. For my other family that I hardly ever see/hear from I do say goodbye. You bring up an interesting point but yes for the most part, in my experience, us Americans don't really say "goodbye" a whole lot over the phone.

They may do that these days with the fast pacing world and cell phones.
But usually folks do say goodbye or i love ya before hangin up.
So many telemarket calls these days, its best to just put the answering machine on.

I always say, "Goodbye, " or some variation thereof. I hadn't noticed that they don't do that in movies, etc. I'll watch for it now, thanks.

OH, and Goodbye!

We always say good bye. I've also wondered why they don't say good bye on films. I guess it's just how the script goes :)

Sometimes, but I think it's mainly done in the movies so that there isn't a scene dragged out with "ok...ok...I will...I love you too...bye."
