im shopping for a new external hard drive. what the heck is the difference between ada or sata or idie i dont undrstand all this, help

From a consumer point of view, the difference is its speed, SATA is faster than ATA/IDE. ATA and IDE are both the same thing. But external harddisk usually don't use ATA/SATA, usually they use eSATA (external SATA) or USB connection.
