You obviously haven't spent much time in NY and NJ, if any time at all. A friend of mine just moved to Atlanta and said that he has never met people more rude and obnoxious in his life in all of NY and NJ combined. You should stop watching so much TV and get off your couch. Travel a bit.

Talk about rude, obnoxious and loud. Jeesh.

All this referencing of the War between the States is crazy. Aren't most of the people there from immigrant families that came over more recently? I have never heard one single solitary Southerner ever mention this as a reason to dislike anyone- or their accent either, but only personality issues and lack of etiquette, etc.

Most of the people I see talking bad about them and stereotypical rudeness are Midwesterners yet I hardly see people from this area ever say anything bad about the Midwest. On the other hand some from here are either prejudiced against Southerners OR assumed to be so they might get slack for that- which is unfortunate. I have met many nice people everywhere including the NYC metro area and I have no issues with people based on where they're from.

Uhhh...

I'm from Ohio, my mother is from Tennessee, and I still get dirty looks when I visit down south. You can't hide the fact that you don't have a southern accent so, some people are going to be rude. Still, once, when I went through Texas, my car's alternator belt broke and a very kind Texan worked on my car for several hours, drove me around to get a new belt, and basically didn't leave my side until my car was back on the road. My guess is, some people can be rude, obnoxious, and loud wherever you go. But hey, some of them can be kind, intelligent and reserved too.

I know people will think I'm crazy, but it also has to do with them being "Yankees" and many in the south have not forgotten the "Carpetbaggers" who came from the north after the War of Northern Agression. And yes, they are rude, obnoxious and loud. While most southerners are genteel and quiet; until it's time for NASCAR racing.

You cant get much more south than I am, I am from Kentucky. I don't despise anyone from those two states. I get alot of abuse from people from those places though. They find out where I am from and automatically think I don't wear shoes, I don't have plumbing have to go to the bathroom in an outhouse, that I screw my brothers, well you get the picture. It's really absurd.
But NO I do not despise them!!!!

1. they are not despised that much...just a t.v thing

2. they dont like them though, because they have no respect for the south, it's great tradition, contributions to America, the fact they provide a large chunk of military protection, they have great universities, we are not all stupid, we dont all have a trailer and YES we dont like smug people. Get lost in Alabama and 17 people will fight for the opportunity to get you back on track.

It's probably due to the Carpet Baggers, who came during the Reconstruction, and further ruined the South, rather than helped it to grow. A bit reminiscent of what's going on, today, in Iraq, huh?

Yes talking funny is one reason. But I can tell you the people in the south are really not interested in hearing how they do it in NY or NJ and do not want those conditions in their home towns. They believe if it was so great up north then why the hell come south only to bore the hell out us with how great is was up north.

Heck why are New Jersey people despised by New Yorkers?

Who cares.

It's because they are yankees - the south still holds grudges for the Civil War.
