I'm in eighth grade, and actually I have learned
violin for two years before. However, now I forgot
how to read the notes and I'm not sure if I do have
talents in music. I don't know what I want to be
when I grow up, but I'm thinking of becoming a violinist
or an artist. But my mom told me that I should have
started violin when I was younger if I wanted to become
a violinist. She says it's too late... My mom wants me
to become a pharmacist or a nurse, but I don't want to.
I do get good grades like straight A's, but I don't really
like studying... And medical colleges require good grades
and high SAT scores, don't they? ;D
I really want to become a violinist.. Is it too late to start again?

Oh no its never too late! Get this! I played piano when i was 7 years old for only one year! I was young I liked it for a little while and then I thought I wanted to other things with my young life. Anyways I started up again, and I wonder how could I ever think of that! Now I love the piano and I wouldn't want to want to trade it for the world. Your are never to old to start something...personally I think when your older you start to understand the responsibilty and discipline of things more. I really encourage you that you play the violin, who knows the feelings that you feel about being a musician may change! I hope you continue to play the violin and just stick with it, if you love the violin and you want to try harder at it, keep up the good work! Have a great day!

It's good that you already know theory, but even though this is true, it takes YEARS on end for almost every person to get good at an instrument. Don't expect to get advanced after 2 years, because it's going to take longer. An instrument, especially one like the violin which involved serious classical music, is not one you can get good at in a short amount of time. Even if you are dedicated, it should take you are least 5 years to get a very good sound out of it, and 10 years to get into really advanced classical music. There is MUCH more in a foreign instrument than just playing the right notes. It's about techniques like vibrato and actually knowing where the notes are. It is never too late to start an instrument. There are plenty of adults who started an instrument, even as really old adults. My old piano teacher used to teach an adult about the same age as him. And he's about 60. This was only 2 years ago to give you an idea. Since we already know you have the dedication with the piano, I guarantee you'll be great at the violin if you set your mind to it. Especially if you start when you are still pretty young, you can definitely learn a new instrument. All it takes it practice, dedication, and good work. Treat this and imagine as if it were your starting instrument or piano, with the same respect and motivation to practice that you had for many years. Best regards.

OMG... i have the same problem. ive been away for almost a year and im starting again this weekend. the thing is i dont really want to be a professional violinist. You should go out and take classes again!!!!! It's NEVER too late as long as you really want to keep up with it, practice your heart out, and sacrifice your time and energy. If you did that I bet you that you could become a violinist.

Even if you dont become one you can still do things on the side, teach others, and many other major things. plus, its good for college btw, im in the 7th grade

It's never too late to learn anything. I play the violin and I didn't start until I was over 30. I love it and now play in a quartet (me on violin, with a viola, cello and piano).

If you want to be a professional violinist I would suggest that you start practicing at least an hour a day and when you go to high school try to go to a school that has a band or offers music lessons.

My guess is that you started two years ago and quit, you might not have a real passion for it. You could still learn but if you're looking for a career type thing, make sure its something you LOVE TO DO!!! You're only in 8th grade, now is the time to try new things and FIND your passion! To be a professional musician takes talent and lots of hard work. Decide what you like and then put everything you have into be a success.

Good luck :)

I don't believe for an instant it's too late for you to become a violinist, and I'm a violinist (adult). If you really want to do it, keep up your grades, and try to find a compromise with your mother. You will need to find a good private teacher -- and a good instrument, if you don't already have one.

Good luck!!

I know this sounds cliche but It's never too late. One piece of advice is, if you are going to take up violin again make sure you can keep on top of your schoolwork and stuff. With plenty of time for your friends too;) If that's what you want though you should go for it and don't let anyone stand in your way.

Best of Luck!!!

No... it's never too late... you will just have to work hard and show your mom that you are comitted and responsible enough to make it work for you! It takes hours of practice and dedication! That is alot for an eighth grader to decide to do, but I believe you can do anything you put your mind to! Good luck!
