In cities and towns, the speed limit (Tempolimit) is 50 km/h (31 mph) unless otherwise posted.
In the last decade or so, the "30-Zone" has gained great popularity. These are residential areas with a posted 30 km/h (18 mph) speed limit to protect children and pedestrians who live in the neighborhood.
On normal two-lane highways the limit is 100 km/h (62 mph). Cars towing trailers must stay under 80 km/h (50 mph).
The autobahn has a "suggested" speed limit of 130 km/h (80 mph), a suggestion widely ignored by many Mercedes and Porsche drivers.
They may suddenly appear out of nowhere, close behind, blinking their brights to move you out of their way. Not even $4.00-per-gallon gasoline can make most German drivers slow down.

Ont the Autobahn there are areas where the only speed limit is the recommended 130kmh. Note that if you are driving over this limit and have an accident you can be held partially at fault. A German court ruling determined that driving over 130kmh. the operator does not have full control of the vehicle, and partial or full fault can be determined when the vehicle operator chooses to take this risk.
Even on the Autobahn there are areas where there are speed limits you must follow the signs.
In towns the speed limit is 50kmh. from the yellow sign that tells you the town/city you are entering to the yellow sign that tells you the town, city you are leaving unless otherwise posted.
Around schools, churches and other area of highly pedestrian traffic the speed limit is 30kmh. Again unless otherwise posted.
Driving in Germany can be a real experience, the autobahn can be a really fun for an experienced driver or really fatal for others, the autobahn is very unforgiving.
Enjoy

Well it depends on where you are but the majority is pretty simple. While in town 50km, school zones 30km, out of town on state highways 100km. On the autobahns, there is normally no speed limit, but they have a recommended limit of 120km.

Sand-Glass´s is right.
I´d like to add a view more details.
You ask about school zones, there is often a speed limit of 30 km/h during school time. The signs show the timeframe.
In towns it is 50km/h. In bigger ones you are sometimes allowed to drive 60km/h or 70km/h on the bigger roads (watch the signs)..
outside towns 100km/h is given... it is often reduced to 70Km/h on crossroads or bends ...
on the autobahn you have no speedlimit, but in most parts the speed is limited to 100/120 or 70 km/h. Take care you don´t drive faster.
therefore, it is not possible to drive as fast as you want. because a lot of autobahn have only two lines.. and not every driver drive fast.
if the autobahn is empty (thats not so often) you can go up with the speed.
One thing the others haven´t mentioned so far: there are zone within cities called "Spielstrassen" . (it´s a blue sqare sign with white playing kids). Here you are allowed to drive 7km/h, as fast as you could walk ...

It's very similar to the U.S. but it's in Kilometers per hour (KPH or klicks.) Generally it's anywhere from 15 klicks to 50 klicks, depending on the town or village or location.
