I have never done any track or strenuos sport before.

Remember to progress slowly. The level of exercise depends on your current level of fitness. If you're not that great at running, you need to build up a lot of endurance. And of course the only way to do that is through running. But I suggest 1.5 miles everyday for the first week, then 3 miles/day for the few weeks after that, until eventually you hit 5 miles. This is good advice for long distance runners, which are supposed to sort of train themselves more than anything. However, if you're looking to be a sprinter, your coach will probably help you out, and you'll do a lot of intervals, short bursts, wind sprints etc. There are different components to both types of running, but all of them require a certain core level of fitness, so long distance running is never bad for you.

don't wear yourself out. always remember to pace yourself and drink plenty of fluids.
