I actually own one. It was my first guitar and it is good for a starter. It does not have the thrash or metal sound if that's what your interested in but it sounds clean and they are relatively cheap (about 200 bucks). Hope this helps.

I've seen them at Costco and Sams club, so they can't be all that 'rare'.

I looked at one closeup, and didn't really see much wrong with it for a beginner's guitar, but that's probably all it's good for, is learning to play lead electric guitar.

Edit: Buddyholly4eva -- that's a STRATOcaster in the video not the newer, cheaper STARcaster that is in the question.

Stratocaster = great Fender guitar
STARcaster = cheap Fender guitar

EDIT AGAIN: there seems to be 2 kinds of starcasters. The one I am talking about is a cheap knockoff of the strat. The one in the wiki article is another kind of starcaster altogether.

Stratocasters range from about $300 to $1700 new. I have one somewhere in the middle and its a really good guitar. The $1700 Eric Johnson strats are Fantastic. The $300 ones are OK but are made with cheaper electronics, and the quality control is not as good so you kind of get what you pay for hear. The one I have is the basic low end guitar with upgraded electronics and a flatter neck radius so I can set the action real low and still bend strings. Its called a Deluxe Players Strat and I like it. If I could though I would sell it and get the EJ.

Oh yea, Strats in general not rare at all, although some models/years are rare and collectible.

stay away from one that says squier on it strats are more expensive and rarer the further back you go. What kind of music do you want to play strats are more twangy (old country and beach music) the thing to remember with guitars is you truly get what you pay for. Most rock music is played on gibson les pauls. But you dont have to go that way($$$$$) you can get a epiphone les paul for around 500$ and its very comparible to the gibson at close to a third of the price. Just do your homework and youll be fine. I myself would prefer a telocaster to a strat. Or go balls to the walls and get yourself a fender jagstang that style was designed by Kurt Cobain. So you know it can kick out that sweet distortion
