it's a blemish on the skin formed before birth. They are part of the group of skin lesions known as naevi. The cause of birthmarks is unknown, but may include cellular damage due to radiation or chemicals. Some types seem to run in families.

in my part of the world, old people used to say that a person born with a lot of birthmarks is going to be lucky and happy. so, maybe it's to measure happiness?

well im not sure scientificly how it happenz but me n mi family believes dat wen ur in ur moms smoach n ur mom has an appitite 4 sumthing n doesnt get it it reflects on ur body :} (wen mi mom wuz pregnant she wanted watermelon in the middle of the winter n she didnt eat it n i hav a birthmark on mi belly :}) gud luck!!!!! :}
