Simple fact is, is that the explosion in the female inmate population is directly attributable to America’s second failed experiment in social-engineering: the War on Drugs. Instigated by Richard M. Nixon –the fecal stain in the history of the US presidency— and his band of felons, escalated by Ronald Reagan, and steadfastly maintained by their successors, the numbers are mounting and will never stop mounting until Americans grow some balls and tell the government to stop.

Sadly, most Americans are nothing but jellyfish—they have no backbone and just go with the flow. However, there are a few that do care about the fixing the problem.

Question is: "do you?"

That would be terrible if they shut women prisons, its completley prejedice on men. If men our sent to prison why should'nt women be?. Ok so they may have mental issues, but so do many men who goto prison. Instead of shutting prisons the government should put more money into trying to reform the female prisoners, and provide better mental health care within them. The problem is not going to go away by letting them live in hostels, if fact just imagine what crimes women would get away with if they knew they would be going to a comfy hostel instead of jail. It would increase more serious crime as the women would not have any kind of punishment and not limits to what they do. The government is completly out of toach with reality, I bet the people who came up with this scheme hav'nt met even one female offender.

I agree, but tell that to the feminists in the government, the prison service, the legal profession etc. Soon, there will be no such thing as female crime, they are regarded as a victim group. Actually, we have been moving in this direction for quite some time, certainly since this left wing government came to power.

I think that the answer to 'caesars' point, is that women often recruit the help of men to do evil things that they would have difficulty in achieving on their own, or, in any event, are happy to go along with because they are deriving some satisfaction from it. It is totally wrong headed to think that women aren't capable of evil.

It is inconceivable that they should consider closing women's prisons, as you rightly say women are just a capable of committing hideous crimes. This would in effect mean people like Myra Hindley and Rose West would have been sent to a comfy hostel! which i think most will agree would really not have been the answer. How would the relatives of victims have felt?

Do you know how expensive it is to keep someone in prison for a week? Did you know that most of the people currently being held have mental health problems are drug addicts and have learning difficulties. Most people are in jail because of drug related offences and non payment of fines. Prisons and hostels are the university of the petty criminals. What is the purpose of punishment? Is it to revenge, to rehabilitate or to discourage others.Yes I agree women should not be treated differently from men and violent criminals should even have tougher sentences. Life should mean life. Convicted criminals should be forced to work to pay towards their keep and others should have community served sentences.

Its crazy UK law again. Some women are worse than men and I can think of nothing worse than letting them stay in hostels. The rate of crime will go up and the number of female offenders will rise. ITs just utter madness by a crazy government

I think it is bizarre. Women are getting more aggressive and violent. I know that Rose West will never be released from prison, she is one of the criminals that will die in jail. (Can I just say to those who quoted her crimes - and Myra Hindley - that although they were evil and deserve todie in prison, they were actually led by men and probably would never have committed a crime if they havne't been controlled by evil men? Not that that's any excuse.)
Sure it's an offense against the equal opportunities laws? Same crime, same punishment.

Looks like the government wants to close all the prisons before they all get arrested for the various offences they have committed over the past 10 years.

i think women and men are both as dangerous as each other and for some sad middle aged bloke sar in his office all day to say otherwise is very stupid and dangerous.
women are clever in their crimes and although they are less likely to commit violent crimes( ALTHOUGH SOME DO), they are very manipulative and use brains rather than braun.
the tv show bad girls is probably more accurate than porrige and i wouldnt want to live next door to a murderer.
it seems that letting them out because they are women is sexist and sets feminism back a hundred years or so.
