6 months ago..the LAST time I rented a car in florida..there was no problem with a spouse. NOW....upon investigating car web sites...most of them DO charge.

Alamo..had a special code..for allowing one additional driver...Hertz won't charge you an additional fee ... if the rental is booked through AAA and the spouse is a member too. ASK ASK ASK before you rent! You don;t want any suprises at rental time.

Nothing happens, unless you get in an accident. I rent with Budget and never had to pay for a second driver, but they did have to be present at the rental process and verify an active license.

Enterprise doesn't charge extra, no matter what member of the family drives their car (so long as they're at least 25 years of age). My wife rented a Chrysler from them, but I drove it for the week we needed it with no extra charge necessary. She did tell them that I would be the secondary driver, in order to ensure coverage (we opted out of their collision coverage, since we are already covered by State Farm).
