Ok so i know this happened years ago but i still hear it. The only thing i dont understand is why it was a big deal i mean i tought nearly all Americans hated the president? Almost everyone American i spoke to said they couldnt stand him so why did people freak out over the Chicks? And artists like EMINEM and PINK have written songs about not liking him and no one said nothing, I really dont get it.

Many country music fans are also card-carrying GOP members. To disrespect the President was an insult to the GOP (Grand Old Party, Republicans). The lead singer of the Dixie Chicks made a comment that she was ashamed to be from the same state as the current president. That offended a lot of people.

I think because of them being country music stars it struck a different sort of audience. People that listen to Eminem and Pink probably don't like Bush so they don't care. Country music fans strike me more as the "God Bless America and My President!" sort of people.

Obviously, I am making a sweeping generalization, but this is my opinion on the situation. My other opinion on the situation is that it's idiotic, the Dixie Chicks are horrible and no one should care what they have to say anyway!

Opinions are GREAT!

Because when it comes to country music fans, a larger than normal majority are Christian Republicans who are for the President and is policies. Eminem and Pink are part of a collective that is way more liberal and would thus agree with their sentiment. The Dixie Chicks however are trying to sell their records to the same folks that disagree with them and thus the controversy occurred. The Christian right is very powerful in this country.

I think part of it is that the Dixie Chicks are from the country music scene. Pink and Eminem stir stuff up every time they write a song. But if you look at some of the stuff that other country artists are putting out, (and other stuff that's wildly popular), you'll get a better understanding: "Have you Forgotten?" Darryl Worley, "Something to be Proud of" Montgomery Gentry, "American Soldier", Toby Keith.

Some people also think that the First Amendment's right to free speech should only apply to their opinion and that if you disagree with their opinion, you should just "shut up and sing." I always found it interesting that so many people kept saying that the Chicks are singers and should just stick to music, but when Toby Keith and other country singers came out with pro war songs, nothing was ever said. Toby Keith is a singer, too so if the Chicks should shut up and sing, so should he and stop all the pro war songs. Like I said, some people only think free speech applies to their opinion.

The majority of country music artists are rednecks? (In response to one of the answers). This is one hell of a generalization. Then it's safe to say that the majority of rappers are rapists and murderers, the majority of rockers are drug addicts, and the majority of pop singers are homosexual. Lets not make generalizations here.

Regarding the Dixie Chicks, it was such a big deal because they tried to push their political view on behalf of country music singers and fans, and most of the people in these groups disagreed with them. They also attacked Toby Keith and his views, and well he is just more popular than they are so it came back to bite them in the you know what. Personally who cares what they think? People in this country act like celebrities are know-it-all morally upstanding citizens. This is crazy, just look at them going in and out of rehad, through marriages like they're nothing, etc. Also most celebrities are LESS intelligent than the average American. They have had less education but yet we give them this podium to preach their views simply because they look and/or sound good. They preach out against capitalism and then get paid $10 million for one movie, or about ten months of work. They claim to want redistribution of wealth to the poor, yet they charge the "poor" $9 to see their movie, and $20 to buy it on DVD, or $16 for one of their CDs. They make a big deal about buying a hybrid car to cut down on oil dependancy, but own a 5500 square foot house that takes take enourmous energy to heat.

These people are NOT the ones we should be looking up too. We should NOT be given them a podium to preach their hypocritical views from. Their causes are not for helping people, they are only for feeding into their self-defined images of being good, moral, superior human beings. Can't people see this?

Because country artists are very boisterous redneck republicans, so for the dixie chicks to do something like what they did, it was really an unheard of thing.

It was a big dal because they are Texans and the President is a Texan and Texans stick together or something like that. All a bunch of stupidity ... we have the right to say what we want when we want and no one has the right to critize us for it!

I don't know who you are talking to but lots of people like Bush. You probably read the New York Times and listen to CNN or something.
