I think you may be talking about an optical illusion. An optical illusion simply means that an image is created in such a way that it plays tricks with your eyes. Another term for this that is sometimes used in art is "trompe l'oiel" (literally, "fools the eye.) An optical illusion may be used to give a sense of movement or depth, or it may be an illustration that presents a physical impossibility in some way. The work of M.C. Escher is a great example of the use of optical illusions in art.
