what was the agreement ? because the certificate is issued in your name it is rightfully yours to keep if they continue to refuse contact the issuing complany and get a replacement it may cost a little bit but worth it.

You don't say what the course was, but any certificate was awarded to you personally as a token of your achievement. The employer is certainly entitled to take and keep a copy, but that certificate is your property. It has your name on it, doesn't it?

Certificates are assigned to persons not companies.

Regardless, feel free to call the institution that offered it and ask for a re-print
