I found that hanging a clear plastic bag filled with water does the same for these flying pests as it does for regular flies. The reflection deters them from thinking it's a safe place to raise a family.

The most effective thing I've seen is called a "waspinator". Wasps and hornets are very territorial, and will not build their nests next to an existing one. This waspinator is, essentially, a fake nest. You hang it up, and it keeps the wasps, hornets, etc.from building. They are very effective. We bought one last summer, as we were having wasp troubles.

They work really well...we gave one to our neighbors, too.

Fill any gaps or holes where they can build their nests around your patio with steel wool. I did this around my kids swing set which was made of wood and it worked great. Also, try re-painting or staining around your patio. The smell drives them away!
