Bear with me I'm new to the game world, but what side of a cd is the playing side, label or shiney?

shiny just like any other disc

The shiny side faces down. The label faces up.

The playing side is the side that you can (or should) see your reflection in. however, some discs have two reflective sides to them. if that is the case, just put in your computer with each side facing up until you get it right. also note that if you scratch of a part of the labeled side, you can damage the CD.
