I personally think it's a big ripoff. Take a second and think about it. Air is sucked through a filter then blown back in your house. It's already been cleaned. Climb up on a chair take a vent cover off and have a look. You'll be surprised how clean it is.

Michael, I assure you that I have seen the inside of more ducts than I care to share ... and I don't clean them. They get rat nasty after a few years.
If you change your filters according to the manufactureres recommended guidlines, then they'll stay pretty clean. But c'mon, you know nobody does!
A good duct cleaning company might have a boroscope with a monitor so you can see what the inside of your ducts actually look like. Many companies will give free inspections with a boroscope.
Just make sure they are using a truck mounted duct cleaning system. You will be able to tell because when it's running it will have these huge sock-looking things sticking out of the truck (that's where all your junk ends up)

Having your ducts cleaned by a reputable company will certainly clean all the heating/ac ducts and vents in the house. Further, it should clean the heat exchanger and A-coil in your furnace. This is also an opportune time to have the fan assembly on your furnace cleaned. Does it work? Well, my children seem to think so as their allergies lessened.

Yep and if it's done right, the air smells great especially if you have it done right before AC season. Change your filter(s) too.
