A manual car is a stick shift car, it will have the gear shifter inside and a clutch to use.
Automatic dont. If you are shopping online it should tell you if its manual or automatic. It is usually safe to assume that if it is not stated that it is automatic (unless you live in Europe, then they tend to be manual). Ask the dealer if it isn't stated.

If there are three pedals on the floor, it's a stick-shift (manual transmission). The pedals have to be there since the clutch is necessary to operate a stick-shift car. The pedals are from left to right clutch, brake and accelerator, or gas pedal.

With most auto trans being shifted from the floor you got to look at the boot or base of the shifter. if it's covered with loose fitting leather or rubber and you got 3 pedals on the floor that would be a manual transmission.
3rd pedal is a clutch which is depressed before or while manually shifting the transmission.

I guess what you mean is,"what's the difference between a standard and an automatic". Well, there is a couple of ways. First automatics are always marked so you know exactly which gear it is in. Also besides the gas pedal there is only a brake pedal for the left foot. Standards however, have two pedals besides the gas pedal one is for the brake and one is for the clutch which you must engage before changing gears.

Do you know how to drive a stick shift? It is called manual. May be advertised as a three, four or five speed.
If you do not know how to drive a stick/manual vehicle you should specifically looking for an AUTOMATIC. These vehicles go through the gears automatically.

the quick way to tell is to look through the driver's window. Look past the steering wheel toward the floor. If you see two pedals to the left of the accelerator pedal, it is a "stick shift".
The additional ( left ) pedal is to operate the clutch with your left foot while using your right foot to push the accelerator or the brake pedal.

automatics have little letters next to the gear shift...
P = PARK
R = REVERSE
D = DRIVE
etc
Manuals (stick shift) have numbers near or on the gear shift...
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ,6...........they dont ever go past 6. That is how many gears there are.
Good luck

if it's a stick shift or standard transmission it will have a clutch pedal on the floor . it is to the left of the brake pedal . in other words you will see three pedals one for the gas one for brakes and one for the clutch. I hope this helps

You want a manual transmission, not an automatic. It will be listed in the cars details.
