Listen to what they are saying and respond appropriately. People that use "lines" don't have friends. Life is not a television sitcom folks don't have teams of writers working for them.
If you are truly tongue tied around people then you have issues that need professional help. I suggest that it is more likely you think anything you say is lame because you are not doing anything you are proud of.
Look around see what people you admire are doing and attempt to learn how to do those things. Then you can ask questions about the activity and draw them out without using cop out conversation gambits. You will be asking questions and genuinely interested in the answer. You will in fact become more interesting in the doing. Good luck.

If you have an idea about what the person you want to talk to is interested in then go up and say something about it. They will probably be much more knowledgeable about it since it is their interest so that means that they can do most of the talking initially and you can just throw in your 2 cents worth. Anyway it should get the conversation started. Most men like to talk about sports, beer, food or maybe even what they are reading. Girls generally like to talk about clothes and show business personalities. Go up to any girl and say you like her shoes and that should get the ball rolling. Since the baseball season is about to start most guys might have an opinion on who they think is going to win, or you might ask how he feels about Barry Bonds being about to break Hank Aaron's homerun record or something like that and then let him do the talking.

I would say " isn't it interesting how so many people cannot spell simple words today?" I would continue to express my thoughts with " and can you believe that Yahoo provides a spell check function and yet so few people bother to click on the button?" You'll be a hit with all your new friends I'm quite sure.....

Start off with general conversation name, age, interests. Or just go up and start a conversation on a current event and ask there opinion of it.
