My wheelchair bound friend has an open wound on the skin on the back of her leg which wont heal up. Is there any remedies apart from using Manuka honey. The skin behind her leg is quite thin too. All ideas greatly appreciated.

Well, my dad is a doctor, and this is what he said:

" In such a case it is possible to get infection, so the wound needs to be closed in order to prevent this. theoretically, the skin should start healing itself, but if this doesn't happen it should be covered with a band aid temporarily to prevent infection, alcohol also works great but i think that she has a different problem, it may be because of another medical problem such as diabetes, there are also other diseases out there that cause super slow healing, i would need to examine you, the best thing to do is go to your local doctor for diagnose....good luck!"

Open wounds should be assessed by either a doctor that knows what he is talking about or an ET RN. She might have circulatory issues that will make healing next to impossible on its own. She might also need adjustments made to the w/c for this go to the vendor or see an occupational therapist. There are different types of wounds and are not all treated equally! Treatment depends on the type of wound, circulation, diet, etc. Is it oozing, is there black tissue around it. Please get it assessed by a professional.

I suspect this wound is from your friends lack of circulation from being in the wheelchair causing an ulceration in her lower extremity. Usually they have stasis of the lower legs and ulcerations as well. These wounds are really nothing to play around with. If it is open and deep I would find a wound care center near you to treat it due to infection and poor circulation in this area which causes slow healing. May also want to try pressure hoses at your medical supply place to improve circulation for healing - See Wound Care Center!
