My two month old has the stomach flu that has been going around. She vomitted once, has diarrhea and a low grade fever. Her dr. had me put her on pedialyte along with her formula, and also give her tylenol for the fever, which is bringing it down. She isn't dehydrated, since she's taking the pedialyte very well and I'm watching this closely to make sure she has plenty of fluids.
How long does this usually last? She seems to be feeling okay, but sleepy. Her Christening is this weekend and I don't want the poor thing to feel lousy on her own special day, or be handled by lots of people if she is sick already.

the stomach flu usually only last 24 hours or so however the rotovirus can last for 10-14 days, which is just bascially diarrhea.

Usually stomach flu lasts between 24-48 hours, long enough for the bug to "pass" through her system. For most adults, stomach flu lasts less than 24 hours, which is why a lot of people call it the 24 hour flu. There's usually LOTS of vomitting and diarrhea involved which helps purge the system of the bug.

Keep pushing the fluids and if she's keeping them down, that's a really good sign. If she has true influenza (which the Dr would have told you, so don't be too worried about that), and not stomach flu, then she could be under the weather for a week or more.

Good luck and hope she feels better soon!

Unless it's a particular virus that goes around regularly (characterized by violent vomiting, followed by foul-smelling diarrhea), she'll be over it in a couple of days. I would be particularly careful, though, in your own case, because it is very easy to get a stomach virus from an infant -- they throw up on you, you're constantly cleaning up the messes, and unless you are incredibly vigilant about washing up and changing your clothes, you will find yourself becoming ill as well. My rule always was that if anyone threw up on me, or if I had to clean it up, I changed my clothes and washed up to my elbows (or beyond) in water as hot as I could tolerate. May seem extreme, but the stomach flu went through my three sons on numerous occasions, wiping out their father and grandparents as well, and I only came down with a mild case once. Coincidence? I'm not usually too anal about germs and disinfectants, but I hate throwing up!

Also, the stomach flu is very contagious. Especially to children. So, I'd try to rearrange the christening if you can. I know it's a pain, but even a week or two will help. The last thing you want is Aunt Matilda getting deathly ill after your party and feeling responsible. Or, your niece or cousin getting a bad case of the same flu.

My son is 12 months and he had the same thing. It lasted about a week for us. My doctor said it can last upwards of one week, but one week is usually when it stops.

Just let her sleep as much as she wants! It will help her get better fast.
