I had this done when I was an infant and so did my mom and her two sisters and now my son is about to go in for "probe and irrigation." It only takes about 30 min total to do and, obviously, the procedure has been around since the 50's! If your baby's duct is really bad, then they may put a stint in to open the duct(that's what they ended up doing with me). They probably won't have to sedate him...but that all depends on how old he is. My son is 21 months and will need to go under anesthesia b/c he's squirmy. It is a very quick and painless procedure that's been done for a long time, so don't worry too much. If you haven't already, go see a pediatric ophthalmologist-they're the doctors who do this all the time. Good luck!

This happens to about 5% of the population.
It can be a big deal if the eye gets infected.
My sons is only partially blocked but it has gotten infected and he's on antibiotic drops right now...
I'm hoping that it will pass ...
I'm also doing warm compresses and duct massage to try and get rid of it before we have to turn to surgery.
I agree with the first writer...if you don't know anything about it first hand...
Please don't hand out misinformation...that's just stupid...it's a child's health we're talking about here...
If you don't know what you're talking about...please...zip it.

I haven't but my nephew had it done. We would take him to the doctor and they would squeeze all the puss out but it never worked. He had to have an operation to unblock it. It wasn't a big deal. He was a little fussy afterwards and his eye swelled like if he was in a boxing match but it was gone in a couple of weeks. IM if you want more information!
Oh and don't listen to people that don't know anything about this. They don't know unless they've been through it. I acutally have been through it with my nephew. I had to be the one taking him to the doctor and watching as they tried and did all they could to unblock.

What makes you think your baby has blocked tear ducts? Babies actually dont usually produce tears, except to keep their eyes moist. It can take weeks, or even months before there are actually tears when they cry. My daughter was 9 months old before she cried tears, and her pediatrician said it was totally normal and just takes longer for some children than others. Just talk to your pediatrician, if you havent already, but dont get tricked into paying for the procedure if your child is just simply like other babies and isnt producing tears yet.
