I have to write a journal entry that asks "What kinds of folk medicines are practiced among your friends and relatives that do not involve taking pills or chemicals"

I guess you are going to put us among the category of friends? :-)

Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 tablespoon raw honey in a juice glass. Fill with warm water, stir to dissolve. Sip with meals to help absorb minerals from food. Also helps to maintain healthy weight.

For puffy, swollen eyes, place thin slices of cucumber over closed eyelids for a few minutes.

To stop bleeding from a cut, place a wet tea bag over and press. Also cayenne pepper helps stop bleeding.

For children's summer diarrhea, make a tea of blackberry leaves. For severe dissentary, use sumac root, boil to make a tea. In less severe cases, use the berries, twigs and leaves of sumac.

For baby colic, give gentle enema of dill seeds made into tea.

For nausea, eat a slice of fresh ginger root, or mix 1/4 tsp. dried powder into cup of hot water and drink.

Boiled gingerroot will give your voice back when you've lost it due to a cold or shouting too much.

Slice a piece of gingerroot and place in a pan of water on the stove. Boil about 30 min, adding more water if needs be. Strain out and discard the pieces of ginger. Drink the liquid piping hot with honey stirred in. Honey's a natural antibiotic, so anytime you're ill use honey as the sweetener of choice.

Soap is good for tight muscles. If you get night leg cramps, place a bar of soap under the bottom sheet near your legs. If you have tight neck muscles, place the bar of soap under the bottom sheet next to your pillow. I've also been known to place a bar of soap inside my pillowcase (up at the top where I wouldn't feel the big bump) as well when my neck was extra tense. Works like a charm.

If you think the soap under the sheets is silly and don't try it, and then you do get night muscle cramping, you can rub liquid soap on the cramped area. (It has to be the kind with real soap in it, though, not just a fancy body wash.) There is something in the soap that relaxes the cramps much faster than using any other muscle rub.
