Ask your employer, it the company's that laid back, you should get an easy answer. You might also take a hint from what others have on their desks, however, they may be looking for something more conservative at the receptionist desk if you are the one who welcomes clients.

Most companies I have worked for with a separate receptionist have not wanted much personal stuff on the receptionist desk, but I wouldn't call those companies laid back. Ask your supervisor if it is okay, make sure you keep it non-offensive, and as much out of public sight as possible.

Make sure it wouldn't be anything offensive to anyone else coming in. We had one that liked dragons and "goth" stuff. Kinda scared some of our older customers! I say go for it. Just make sure they're portable, in case you get canned and have to pack up and leave!
