Because they're afraid of being labeled a bigot, racist, homophobe, or other such rot just for expressing their views about a certain person or lifestyle.
People don't realize that just because you have to tolerate something doesn't mean you have to accept it. They're too worried that they might offend someone's sensibilties and have narrow-minded lobbyists on their butt for it.
So much for freedom of speech, huh?
