just asked the exact same question, i am suspecting it may be the altenator belt needs replacing or just tightening, mine is a brand new altenator so i know thats fine.

I assume your MG-TF has the original DC generator in it as opposed to an alternator conversion. Normally a generator doesn't produce an output at engine idle speed so the "GEN" light will be on. Once the engine's speed is increased the generator begins to produce and the light goes out. If you have to race the engine for a time to get the "GEN" light to go out, this may be a symptom of a generator that needs rebuilding, namely cleaning, turning the commutator, new brushes, and so forth. If it goes out on its own, you may have a somewhat faulty regulator. Have the system checked by a mechanic who actually knows something about DC charging systems.

Greggars hi : I would first check the alternator belt & pullys .. This could be belt slipage . If not you will need to look deeper into the problem . Check loose wires to and from the alternator. If need be hook-up a voltage meter . Start up & monoter .. If no results you may need to replace your alternator it could be on its way out . Sometimes with crazy electrical problems .I use the old rule if it's not broke don't fix it . At least when it goes you know you are fixing the correct problem .. Good Luck

At least there's one other person in this world who knows an MG-TF has a generator, not an alternator.
Your voltage regulator is adjustable, and it should be the first thing you check. Here's a good writeup on adjusting these old Lucas units:

If that doesn't do it, you may need to disassemble the generator, replace the brushes and buff the commutator.

just had to answer your question . i can not work out why so many people are confused . you have an MG TF which is the next model on from the MGF . your car has an alternator . check the belt adjustment first if this is ok then the alternator is on the way out . mg rover trained technician .

This can mean that the alternator diode is on the way out. The time period lengthens to a good few minutes, then one day no charge.

perhaps there is a very Small short circuit somewhere near the alternator, probably course is moisture(water) when the engine is warm the water is vanished and the short circuit is gone, check the cables and connections !

Possibly the alternator drive belt just needs tightening. Try that first.
