Ponting is a stroke player and Pietersen a big hitter. Ponting shows consistency and is hardly ever gone for a little score. Pietersen has to get into the game first and can sometimes get out very cheaply. Ponting, at the moment is the worlds best cricketer so i will have to go for him.

Pieterson on his day can be devastating and better than Ponting. But Ponting is so much more consistent. Pieterson always gives the bowler a chance with his aggresive style. They are both very different players Ponting is more the anchor player for australia who comes in early knocks the ball around hits sixes at the end and gets a hundred. Peiterson will normally get in later and be aggresive from the start of his innings and take it to the bowler. Pieterson's either great or crap.

Without a doubt it's Pieterson, solely because he's English (or at least playing for England). Unfortunately talent wise its got to be Ponting

Ponting is a fantastic all-round cricketer. I think he's proven during his time as captain that he is certainly one of the greatest players of all time.
Pietersen is also a very impressive player to watch when he's in good touch. I think that he's not quite at Ponting's level yet, but perhaps in time, he'll get there. He certainly proved himself as a great cricketer through the 2005 Ashes series.

Ricky Ponting is the better cricket player, as he has been at the top of his game for a longer time, has scored runs against all sorts of different attacks in all sorts of different conditions and he is a better fielder. The jury is still out on his captaincy.

Ricky Ponting even though he's an arrogant, grumpy aussie is the best batsmen since Geoff Boycott.

It couldn't possibly be Pieterson, hes still at his first world cup and has yet to prove himself to be consistent.
Ponting is a brilliant cricketer, proven to be a leader and has had many great cricketing years despite him being an Aussie :)

Think Ponting has had his time, now is the time for Pietersen to fill the void of world's greatest batsman.
However, at the moment, it is hard to tell between them as they have different styles of play.
