I've been practicing every day for Drum Major tryouts for about an hour. There will be two of us auditioning (one junior and one freshman) and I'm the freshman. I've been working on my tosses and trying to get them to go higher (anybody able to help on that? they're going higher the more I practice, about six inches every hour). Any advice you have? I'm looking for all the advice I can because I'm really excited yet not that nervous...I most likely don't realize when auditions are yet (in May).

I've had lots of leadership ability in Scouts and I was elected Troop Leader by a 70% vote when I ran against three other people.

If your function as a drum major is going to be to lead and direct the band on the field (not just a baton twirler) then your first step is to develop your marching ability to the point that you are a perfect example for the other members of the band and to perfect your conducting techniques.

Make sure that you know the marching style that the band director wants as it relates to step-offs, turns, facing movements, halts, etc.

May I suggest that you try to find a book titled "The Dynamic Drum Major" by George N. Parks published by C.L. Barnhouse Music Publishers. It has all the information you need to become an excellent drum major.

Good luck.
