He was betrayed and attacked by his senate and the coup de grâce was by his friend, Brutus. It is quite plausible this is where the term "back stabbing" originated.

I suppose you refer to the Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar. Died of 23 stab wounds, Caesar was killed in the Roman Senate, by Brutus and his brother-in-law Cassius and other men, calling themselves the Liberatores ("Liberators").

He was stabbed to death by a group of senators in the Roman forum. They said he was trying to destroy the Republic and create an empire. Others thought the senators were afraid he would grow too powerful (he had a standing army and they didn't) so they got rid of him.
