It is easiest to iron damp clothing rather than fully dried items. If items are too dry, try spraying or misting them with a spray bottle filled with water. If you have multiple items to iron, throw them in the dryer with a wet towel and run it through the low or no-heat cycle.

The ironing board should be at hip level to prevent the back strain. Choose an ironing board with adjustable height options so you won't have to bend over.

A silver ironing-board cover is best for heat disbursement, but if you don't have one, simply place a layer of foil under the cover to reflect the heat.

Starch your ironing board cover so it will stay cleaner longer.

Season the item first by sprinkling with water and putting in the refrigerator overnight.

Add some sprigs of lavender to your ironing water for a fresh scent.

When ironing shirts, start with the cuffs and collars inside out. Move on to the yolk or shoulder area of the shirt, then down toward the sleeves. Next do the body and the front panel last. Wrinkling usually is avoided if you iron in this order.

Always iron shirt collars on both sides, with the inside first. Iron inward from the point of the collar to avoid pushing any creases to the tip.

Make your own spray starch by mixing one tablespoon of cornstarch with one quart of water.

If you are ironing sensitive or dark fabrics, use a pressing cloth between the fabric and the iron to prevent any damage done to the fabric (any thin white cotton linen cloth will do).

No pressing cloth? Use an old pillowcase or a lightweight dishtowel as an ironing cloth.

If you are confused as to what side you iron specific garments, let's clear it up: Cotton or silky rayon should be ironed right side up. Polyester can be ironed either way. All other items should be ironed inside out. Iron dark fabrics inside out to prevent shine. If you are uncertain, iron inside-out to be safe.

If you are ironing something that has a raised embroidered design on it, lay it right side down on a terrycloth towel and use a burst of steam.

I never iron, so I wouldn't know.
But I keep our clothes pretty wrinkle free by taking things I want to look nice straight from the hot dryer and either hanging them up or folding them nicely while they are still warm.
