I think that women love stories about love overcoming adversity, and are sympathetic. So gay men are admired and seen as romantic as they can have more barriers and problems with finding love. I.e coming out, coming to terms with being gay, finding a partner in areas where it's hard to find anyone else who is gay, and putting up with all the crap they get from prejudiced people.
In the old days the love interest would come from overcoming barriers like different classes, or races, this is the last forbidden love and so it is romantic.
Plus women love giving advice and setting people up.
I guess anyway!

1. People want what they can't have.
2. Some see it as a challange.
3. Some gay guys are more sensitive than most straight guys.
4. Seems like so many of the great looking guys are gay.

The woman doesn't have to worry about sex coming between them and they can have a lot in common.

because they sometimes are better than other female friends and have wonderful taste in fashion.
