Hi all,
Usually all my questions are jokes and i come on here to have fun and meet new friends not for outright serious stuff unless the question or answer requires it. I know i could find several answers to this online if googled or through medical books. But none of those have first hand accounts of stuff like this. So please no jokes and only answer if you have a serious point to raise.

Today on my 5 year old sons chest we found a lump. He has been the doctors and been reffered to alder hay hospital one of the leading childrens hospitals in the uk. The doctor confirmed it is a growth of some kind but is not sure and to be careful wants it checked out. All I want to know is what else could this be other than the big C as my head is scrambled and i want some sort of preparation before i take him to hospital. Have you had any first hand experience of this what was it and any advice you all could give would be amazing.I Thank you in advance for your help you are all great people :0)

Firstly stop and take a deep breath! Relax, I know it's not easy but you need to stay calm for his sake! He'll react to your worry and become frightened! If possible make an appointment for yourself with your GP and ask him what to expect. What tests they may do etc. That way you'll be prepared as well as you can be!
The chances are it's a fluid filled cyst or a growth of grissle! I've had several over 50+ years in various places and the first was on my chest at age 4! They've either disappeared on their own or been removed surgically but none have been malignant! No-one is sure what causes them or why in my case I've had several!
Alder Hay is where my son was treated for a different condition and the staff were brilliant! It needs to be tested to discover what it is and if it needs removing it will be done quickly and easily!

Whatever I tell you is not really going to reassure you but I hope this will help.
When has your son got to go to hospital?

usually if they suspect something like the big C in a child they will take them straight in to hospital.

My son had an abdominal mass 7 years ago they suspected cancer ( it was )and he went straight to hospital and was receiving treatment within days.

How is your son in himself?
that's usually a good indication of whats going on.
When my son was ill it wasn't just the lump, he was pale listless, poor appetite and just "not right".

It could be that they just want to be cautious.
I hope every thing will be fine.

I hope my answer has not scared you. My boy has been well for nearly 7 years.

I hate to think of parents worrying alone so please feel free to email me if you think I can help more.
All the best.

My daughter had a lump on her chest .. close to her neck... i even being a nurse// premed... BS biology.. freaked out same thing.. thought Cancer/// thought .. airway.. airway.. airway... went and got it removed by a surgeon ASAP.. found out it was only a fluid filled cyst... :-?? wasnt sure of the cause.. possibly... had trauma to the area.. got hit or poked with something... anyways.. good luck...PS --she was 3 at the time...--thought of a little more info... it was a circular... lump.. with no signs of redness.. injury.. no poke marks or bruise..etc.. just a knot like thing...close to her clavical on the top of her chest..
