There are only slight differences, and ... no we can't physically tell one VJJ from another. However, the person attached to that very awesome body part CAN make a difference - that we can tell (hot, active person vs. cold fish).
I think it was great because he missed you. You two may be able to continue with no strings attached. I personally attach more to sex than that, but hey, that wasn't your question.
My answer is he missed you. It was great because you two are close, whether there is any other commitment other than you are good enough to share very intimate moments with each other and even more intimate parts of yourselves. Make sure he is regularly having himself tested and you do the same (especially for HPV - it kills women, and there are usually no warning signs).

Let's say I eat at five different restaurants. It's my choice which one to eat at. Undoubtedly, I am going to like some better than others, some less. If there is a significant difference, one might even become my favorite.
I assure you that there is a greater difference between two women than two restaurants. Even still, I might not want to eat at my favorite every time, so don't start thinking he necessarily wants a deeper commitment.

You no that you're not the only one he's sleeping with, & you're wondering if he's continuing tosee you because of what you have to offer or the sex. Well if he's sleeping with other women then you really don't have anthing to offer but sex.
