I bought my house and it had a small pond in the back one of my ideas was to convert it into a sunken firepit. However here is where my question lies. How do I provide adequate drainage for it. I live in the Hutto, TX area and we have very clayey soil.

If the land on any side of the pit slopes away....dig a trench in the bottom of the pit and out the side towards the slope......lay in perferated drainage tile....cover with a layer of driveway stone......finish burying with dirt.

Note: on windless, damp nights the smoke will settle in the lowest place....your pit.
