Definately in 1895. The Twickenham heirarchy would not allow clubs to pay their players for broken time (time off work) This was no problem to the hooray henries down South with their spoilt lifestyle, university background and family fortunes but to the miners and millworkers in the north of England it meant they could not afford to play as they would miss work. I think 30 clubs attended the meeting and with the exception of Dewsbury elected to break away from the rugby union. They became known as the Northern union. The game was union at first and players were paid forthe time they missed work to play in a game. Rugby league as we know it is a totally different game but evolved from rugby union. Before 1895 there was only one rugbyand that was union.

Rugby League was alway pro. It was a off shoot of rugby union in Australia for that very fact. "rebel players and teams wanted payment and rugby union would not pay them. Thats why the codes are only "slightly" changed.

1895. Was played in the northern mining towns. The players couldn't get paid time off work to play, so they started a paid league.
