I'll be done college early May. (May 9th to be exact)...So i'm looking for a job starting around that time. It'll be a basic job at like a best buy, target, walmart, etc. ...So what would be the best time to put in an application? Now? Is it too soon? thanks.

Aah....Good feedback. And by "done college" I mean ill be done my first year of college. Last summer I volunteered in something in my (hopeful) field (at a Dr's office). This summer i just need some cash and working experience.

you can start doing it now but make it clear to your prospective employer that you can't start til May.

if you get no reply, no harm in trying again nearer the time, they may have a vacancy then that they are not aware of at the mo if someone leaves

good luck

Quality is subjective. Quality depends on an individual's own standard. For example you think that if there is a 100 marks in a test paper, you would say that is quality. For others, quality is more than 80 marks. Another example if you get a promotion, people would say you must be a person of quality. But on close observation, you are not a person of good character. Can you still be considered as a person of quality ? When we buy something, what is our expectations of the items we bought ? Do we expect the item to function for at least 5 years without breaking down ? Do we expect the item to work as good as new for the next 10 years ? Many items these days last for 5 years including new cars. Slowly things will start coming off. So can we say that these 5 years have been quality time ? Or may be the clients should know all about what they are buying; the good and the bad, to avoid giving a false expectation.

The best way to determine when you should start applying is to see how soon an employer wants to hire someone.

For hourly jobs, such as the one you mentioned, many of these accept applications all the time and go through them to invite candidates for interviews on an as needed basis. If there is a sign posted, the employer will likely be interested in candidates who will start right away. In this case, you should not apply until you are ready to start working - perhaps 2 weeks before.

If the employer does not have an advertised posting, it will not hurt you to start applying early, perhaps 1-2 months before you are ready to begin work. Even if they call you for an interview sooner, you will do yourself a service to start practicing your interviewing skills.

I'm very curious about why you are looking for a "basic job" and not something in your field.

Many of those types of stores have constantly changing workforce and usually have a list of applicants to draw on as required

My advise would be to contact them to find out their employment policy and fill in an application ASAP.

If you have finished college and have a degree why go into such a dead end job, unless you are aiming at management in the long term.

If that is the case they may have their own advancement programme.

Anyway get on the phone and ring around. They will tell you their policy which is what you want.

Would you ask a baker about your banking or ask your banker about baking ? ( the same applies here )

I would say now, there are going to be a lot of college kids looking for jobs so you need to jump on any open positions. Ask them if they hold applications and resumes or if you should get back with them closer to May. Good luck to you!

No, it's not too soon now, but you'll find that most places that are hiring are going to try and get you in as soon as possible. At the same time, you don't want to get caught up in the summer job rush! The sooner, the better!

There are pros and cons to working summers. A lot of other people will be looking for summer jobs. On the other hand, there will be a lot of people that will want to go on vacations for the summer. Your best bet is to apply and let them know when your start date is. Just call back and make sure they don't forget who you are.

I think it's a bit too soon. I did that last year and had to continually remind them that I couldn't start till May. Then they started trying to get me to work during Spring Break and on weekends, and during graduation weekend.

Put in your application and try to get through the interview process in April.

um hello?

You have a college degree and you're going to work in a department store?

Did you not learn anything at college?

You went to college so you could get a job and not something a pimple faced teen does!!!

Why don't you go to the guidance department at your school and ask them if they know of any job opportunities for your career choice. No offense but considering you went to college you should atleast know of places that you can work at....

What kind of college degree are you getting that your goal is to get a "basic" retail slave job?? You take one of those jobs as a last resort.

Go to your career center and talk to them about finding you a job in your field. See who is coming to campus to recruit in your field and get signed up to talk to them. Do research on companies in your field at the career center and start sending out resumes.
