It can go back as far as when your hair (at it's end) was growing. If your hair is several feet long, they could go back more than a year.
Drugs don't dissipate from the hair, they get cut off. The hair produces a history of drug use. If you have two years of hair growth, they can determine what and WHEN you took drugs within the two years.

drugs stay in your hair more then 90 days. They can stay in your hair for years depending upon the drug and how often you used the drugs. Be careful.

Yes it takes 5 years to outgrow a drug test. Ive heard getting a perm helps you pass one. They do hair because it tells them what drugs youve done in the past 5 years.
