It is the limit in which a person should go, however, depending on how lucky you feel it could be the minimum and then you can test the max speed of your vehicle and possibly the cops ... if you don't mind the thought of a getting a ticket...and no doubt a hefty one!
As somebody else has said, it's almost like an unwritten rule for people to go at least 5 over though, but depending on where you live, the cops may not be lenient about that. Regardless of your speed on the road, drive with care and be kind to other motorists.

It is a limit on how fast you can go.
What's more important, based on what you write, is (and this is what the Calif. Highway Patrol recommends) that you keep with the flow of the traffic. If everyone is going 5 mph over, and you are the only 'slow' one, then it is better to speed up and go with the flow, rather than being the one that might cause a problem.
Now, that doesn't mean, that if everyone is going 20 mph over the speed limit that you should, too. There is a 'limit' to that suggestion by the CHP. That's something that comes with driving experience.

Boy, from some of the answers on here, you can tell why E.M.S. people call them "organ donors". Sounds like they need to perform a headectomy. You know, pulling their head out of their a----. Speed limits are the top speed you should go. Do not let anyone "push" you to go faster. I just keep driving the limit & if they don't like it, tough. I give myself plenty of time to get to wherever I'm going with a bit of time to spare. I don't like/wont be rushed. My insurance is lower too because I don't get tickets....of any kind. Been driving since 1961. Had 1 parking ticket & 1 changing lanes w/o using turn signals ticket in all that time. I don't think that is a bad average. I've never caused anyone to get hurt or even have any kind of accident either. So use your best judgement here. You know the answers.

If a sign has a White background with the speed limit posted, that tells you how fast you can go on that road. If the sign has a Yellow background with the speed limit posted it is a Caution sign telling you not to exceed that limit for safety reasons. A speed limit is just that "limit"... don't go any faster then what is posted or you are breaking the law. You will always find jerks who don't obey the law and all I could recommend is to ignore them and drive legally. I hate tailgaters myself and if it's any constellation to you just keep in mind that if they rear-end you they are automatically in violation of the law for not having their vehicle under control at all times. Ignore them... they eventually disappear.

Haha I have the same problem I've had my lisence for three months and there are always people speeding and passing. This has made me become a speeder. You have to maintain the speed limit according to the law you should'nt go under it too far and you should'nt go over more then 5 even thought thats not a law but most cops wont issiue you a ticket for over 5 becuase of hills and surrounding traffic etc.. 've had soo many problems with my speed I'm gonna go look at other people's answers to simmilar questions... good luck!

It is the limit, meaning you should not go over it. I always go 5-10 over the speed limit I will admit. However, if the weather is bad or I am in a school zone I do the speed limit and if the people behind me don't like that is there problem :)

The law says its the max but the reality is its as fast as what the current traffic is traveling at. If you drive just the speed limit in some cities you will get honked at or flipped off if you're impeding the flow of traffic.

The speed limit is the suggested safe speed for ideal conditions, if it's snowing out you shouldn't be going 75mph,
For the same tokin you shouldn't be going 25mph in the fast lane of the freeway. Try to keep with the flow, if that's to fast take an alternate route.

Depends on the conditions. If the road is slippery you can be charged for going the speed limit. Clear dry road you go with the flow.
