I recently bought a 95 nissan pickup, and a month ago when I test drove it, the ac kicked in nice and cold. Now, a month later, the ac is blowing lukewarm. My dad seems to think there is a freon leak that the previous owner failed to mention to me, but I'm thinking maybe there just isn't any freon left. I'm no car guy, but does freon run out and do I need to refill it? Or is there probably a leak that I need to get fixed?

If it happend that quickly it could very well be a leak. Easy to have the system checked and recharged.

Your freon will not just run out. If there is no leaks and the compressor is fine then it will always blow cold. (Think of a fridge or freezer). Now what you need is a dve kit. I bought one for about $30 and it came with the dye and the ultraviolet light, glasses and stuff to clog the leak. You spray it in there and if your compressor no longer kicks on. (some systems will disable the compressor when the pressure drops) then you need to run a jumper wire straght from the battery and then shoot in some dye and use the light to see where it is coming out. Once you patch the hole use the jumper wire ONLY long enough to charge the system enough for the compressor to come on, on its own, as the little bottles of freon at the store doesnt have enough pressure to charge the system without the compressor running. Then fill to about 25 PSI.

Your cooling system is a sealed unit. If the freon is gone, than more than likel;y you have a leak. You can take the car to any garage who refills the system. They will perform a vaacuum test, if it hold vacuum then you have no leak. But if the vacuum slowly leaks down, then you have a leak in the syste. They can trace this will a dye or a freon detector. Once found and repaired, then they can now recharge your system and get your cold air back on track.
good luck.........

I think you have a leak but not all bad sounds small most of the time the leak is at the end of the hose that goes on the compressor there is a little seal mental or maybe a rubber o ring I have seen this happen more than once this is a cheao fix a dealer will rip you off.

Refrigerant charge doesn't exit the system without a leak. Most likely there's a leak and the leaking A/C system component needs to be replaced. Another thing that could cause this problem is a broken A/C compressor belt. If the belt is broken the A/C compressor will not compress the refrigerant which causes the system to be unable to cool the air entering the cabin.

play it safe, and have a leak check done first. either way you will have to charge more freon, but at least if you fix any leaks first then you won't be wasting more money on more leaked out freon. it's only a few dollars for a leak test. Good Luck!

My 95 nissan b14 also has this problem. According to some, the car should be used at least once a week for it not to run out of freon - I doubt it. after 2 months refilling it.. it blows warm air again..
HELP.

I beg to differ,
I am an old car nut and often buy a car with the air running hot, the guy I use to re-gas them tells me that the hoses are porous, the gas will leak away every 3 to 5 years, needing a top up.

there has to be a leak to loose the freon, you will have to take it to a air conditioning man to get it checked out and refilled.

It only runs out if there is a leak. Apparently they filled it to sell it. Don't just add more and let it escape, get the leak fixed.
