I'm moving in today and there's a weird 'rotten' or 'rancid' smell in my new apartment -- just in one of the rooms (kitchen/living room with hardwood floors...all 1 room). I've opened up all of the windows, but the stench remains stubborn. Help!

I'd get the manager to come in there...could be something wrong (or if it is a really rancid smell, like I had once, could be a dead rodent or animal in the wall!!) I've used oust before, but I didn't like the fragrance and it reminded me of the joke about the drunk man who gets on an elevator right after a woman had just passed gas and happened to have some pine scented air freshener that she sprayed...he said "smells like someone just s**t a Christmas tree in here! In other words it didn't get rid of the smell, only mixed with it. There are the plug ins that are good, and there are even some with a fan that works wonders, but it can be a bit too much. No matter what, get the manager in and let them know of the problem before you move in.

Sounds like something wasn't cleaned before your move in, try checking all the closets, cupboards, under the sink, where-ever something may have been left to spoil, if you find nothing then possibly a rodent has died in-between the walls which means contacting your landlord to try and find it to get rid of it.

If opening all the windows did not work. It may be a dead animal for example a rat. Try searching for it.

Open all the windows and burn a lot of unscented candles. Give it a THOROUGH cleaning.
