I just recently received it (month 1/2 ago) and I absolutely hate it! My period was late and my cramps were SO bad. They haven't been that bad since I was 12. A week and a half later I was still on my period, usually only last 5 days. I have tried just about every form of birth control. I couldn't remember to take a pill everyday for the life of me. Did the patch, interacted with medication I was on, made me very sick. Did the NuvaRing, got pregnant. I am unsure about IUD's as there is alot of family history of female problems and just don't want to risk it. My question is does being on the shot get better or will it continue to make me moody, gain weight, and have the never-ending period? Has anyone liked the Depo shot?

I'm with Ontario - coming off of it was the worst part. I stopped taking it right as my husband left for Iraq, and I spent the whole year he was gone an emotional wreck. Between him leaving and the crazy hormonal crap that getting off of the Depo gave me, I was not a happy camper. I just felt like crap, physically and mentally, the whole time it was working it's way out of my system (which took about a year).
I was on it for a year though, and I didn't get a period from the time I got the second shot until 5-6 months after my last shot. I didn't get a period that I considered normal or regular for a year after I stopped taking it. I also gained weight, not a lot, just enough to make me not feel very good about myself. I also found that I enjoyed sex a lot more after the Depo was out of my system, and had a higher sex drive - at least one other woman I spoke to said the same thing.

I started Depo at my six week checkup after my son was born and absolutely hated it. The only good thing about it was I didn't get my period after a few shots. However, I gained a lot of weight with it, which didn't help since I hadn't lost any of the pregnancy weight yet. I switched to the IUD after a year and a half on Depo, and loved it. I got my period back (which I could have done without) and wound up pregnant at the end of the fourth year, but would totally get the IUD again after the baby's born. You may want to get one more shot and see if things improve. If not, then I'd look into something else, although I'm not sure what else is out there for you to try.

I loved the depo shot. I was on it for nearly 4 years. In that time i never did have a period which i loved and i didn't gain weight nor did i get pregnant on it. I never had any trouble with the shot. I stopped taking it to become pregnant which i did 11 months later.
You have other options if you don't take your next shot:
*Get your tubes tied
*Use condoms and spermicide
Here is a new form of permanant birth control (Essure)

There is no right answer to your question everyone is different. I was on the shot for a little over 4 years after the first 3 shots I did not have a period at all. Go to the web site pizier.com (not sure if i spelled that right but you should be able to google it) you will be able to get all the info. you want and there is a 24 hour hotline you can call and acutallly speak to nurses that can answer questions for you. And I lost weight while taking the shot.

My sis had horrible problems with the Depo shot, but my assistant loved it and had no ill effects- except for weight gain. I had the Mirena IUD put in after my 2nd child and LOVE it. I had very little side effects for a month after and now after a year- no periods, no cramps.

I was on Depo for a year. I didn't bleed at all. I loved it. Until the mood swings started, the weight gain. Coming off was a nightmare.
