they get a better education in things like science as they know more now then when we were kids. Kids in schools today though are wrapped up in cotton wool because of pc gone mad. When it comes to maths they can use a calculator we'd have been thrown out for being anywhere near one. I think we had to work out problems more as computers were not as big as they are today. My son goes to my old primary school and the library is now a computer room! I think it is easier now but the standards are not as harsh.

No, they don't get a better standard. I think the standard is somewhat lower than it was 20, 30 years ago. What is different now is the approach and lesson plans which tries to make education more interesting. Use is made of TV, internet, role plays, etc, as well as books. In some cases I'd say that books are seen as secondary devices which was never the case in my day (1970s).

Science always grows, we learn from the past and build on it because the Universe doesn't change. It's not the same with education. Society does change and so Ed. has to change to keep up and usually it's behind in the game.

Now I can answer your question. No, I don't think that. As a teacher I think education is struggling a bit at the moment, but going back to a past regime would not help. The sad thing is that the moment we have improved one thing there is another problem rearing its head. It's like spinning plates really only new ones keep appearing!

Is that a joke?

Remember the Good 'ol days? People used to be prepared for the real world straight out of high school. That was all people needed because schools weren't overrun with wild students and teachers who cared more about a paycheck than actually teaching kids something.

I think from a federal standpoint, yes, they constantly try to create higher academic standards all the time. But whether or not schools, teachers, or the public is held accountable to that is, at best, arguable.

There's no doubt that kids know more today, considering they have unlimited access to world knowledge via the Internet, but today's bachelor's degree is yesterday's high school diploma. Most people are lucky to achieve more than lower-middle class standards without one.

No! I think the standards are lowered so that average grades (and the government) look better. I think maths and English are the two most important subjects, but because everyone uses computers with spellcheck and calculators, the English language doesn't seem so important and people don't know how to spell or do mental arithmetic any more.

No, it`s not a better standard, it`s a different standard. I though I was more knowledgeable in certain things when I left school in 1971 than my kids were, who left school 10 years ago. They however were more knowledgeable in other subjects.

Certainly not. Look back at the english language 100 or so years ago. Now look at our newspapers today- which are on average written on a 6th grade reading level. The average adult reads on a 6th grade reading level.

Our education system is pathetic.

I was in school through the sixties. I think generally it is better now. My kids seem to be doing better then I was at that age. Unless they're just more intelligent then I. I did not like school much, but they seem to love it.
