Here is a site with tips for beginners. http://www.ez-shot-ghost-ball.com/pool_shooting_tips.html
I would find some place to practice by yourself before you go though. Also, telling them you never learned how to play is your best bet. If they are good mates, they'll help a buddy out :)

I'm a woman who was an ameteur pool player. I have played with some of the best. I have yet to tell anyone how to play without them being there. Ok, look good. Pick up the pool stick lay it on the table and roll it, if its warped, don't use it, also find the weight that fits you, mine is 20-you should try a 24 (unless you are 5'6" 145 lbs). You have already knocked the socks off your friends. The rest is gravy. Is this a regulation size or 6 ft. Anyway, do you know math? Shooting pool is basically geometry. Angles. Once you get started you will be hooked. It's like golf without all the running. So, you have your stick. Take the chalk and rub it on the tip, this keeps most from 'scratching' the cue stick won't slide off the ball you are aiming at. Let's say you have a partner and he wants you to 'break' that is knock the balls all over. After they set up the balls, put your cue ball on the right, left or middle. You should see a divit on the green. You can squat a bit, to get a good look at the ball in the front of the V. Put the stick on the table-slide it a couple times to give you an idea, then reach out, lay your arm on the table and the cue between your index finger and the second one. your hand will be sitting like you are holding a beer kinda loosely. Bring the stick back from the cue ball no more than 3 inches. 3 or 4 times watching the cue all the time. Look up and see the ball in front and pull back from the cue ball about 10 inches and whack, hit it. No matter what you have made your first attempt at pool. If you hit the cue into the balls goody for you. It's someone else's turn. When it is your turn find the ball closest to the pocket. (We can do other things later) If you have to put your hand on the side rail to get to the cue ball-fine, do it. Gosh, we haven't even gotten to right and left english. Good luck guy, write, I will miss you.

Don't play, just say you don't like that sort of game and you'd rather look for something with only one hole.
The same thing happened to me I'd never played and my friends have. The game can be played for beginners but if your friends have been playing for a few years then you're going to get slaughtered (just like I did) you'll just lose every game and they will not want to play with you as you're not at the same level as them. The game is quite skill based once you've been playing for a while, and believe me it can be painful to watch them wipe the floor with you every game. If you haven't played before then you wont be able to match them at it, sorry. My advice do what I did give up and stay at the bar and chat up the bar maid with funny jokes and why she should not consider you a drunk but a stud! It will probably not work but your chances a going to look a lot better then at the pool and at least you'll have a chance.
Good Luck mate (Just play one if you have too, just don't over do it)

Just say you've never played pool before, what's the big deal? Take them out to a game that you play well (and they don't) and see how they react!

Put a bandage round your wrist and say that you've hurt your wrist so can't play..... lol
But seriously just tell them the truth, if they are mates then they will probably relish the challenge to teach you!
Goodluck x

9-ball - (the 1st 9 balls are used) balls are sunk in numerical order, ball-a million gets sunk first, ball-2 gets sunk 2d, and so on... sinking the 9-ball is an on the spot win the regulations for 8-ball is somewhat greater good to describe (yet i will attempt) (each ball is used) extremely your the two solids or stripes you sink YOUR balls FIRST....then you definately sink the 8-ball in case you sink the 8-ball while your no longer meant to ?....you lose in case you sink the 8-ball on the wreck...you win (www. ozone billiards. com)...they have newbie books & DVDs there is SOOOOOOO plenty techniques....you will in no way get it here

Tell them, and they will show you. Try to fake it, and you will just look like an idiot.
