first of all bit in computer lingo is short for binary digit. People count using ten digits (0-9) and computers count using 2 digits (0-1) people do decimal arithmetic and computers do binary arithmetic. we use 1's, 10's, 100's or 10 to 1st power, 10 to 2nd power, 10 to 3rd power,... and so on. Computers use powers of 2 . 64 bit means the computer can use a maximum of 64 binary places , 32 bits mean the computer works with a maximum of 32 binary digits.
