All you need to do to perform addition or subtraction is to get the LCD. For example,
1/2 - 1/4 = 2/4 - 1/4 = 1/4
1/3 + 5/7 = 7/21 + 15/21 = 22/21 = 1 1/21

The LCD is the least common denominator, or the smallest number that is a multiple of both denominators.

Multiplying and dividing is even easier.

To multiply, multiply the denominators together and the numerators.
1/3 * 5/7 = (1*5)/(3*7) = 5/21
2/5 * 1/8 = (2*1)/(5*8) = 2/40 = 1/20

To divide, multiply by the reciprocal.
1/3 divided by 5/7 = 1/3 * 7/5 = 7/15
2/5 divided by 1/8 = 2/5 * 8/1 = 16/5 = 3 1/5.
