You can follow your dog around and dump water on the spot where they go. I've done a lot of research on this, and it's the most effective (and most ridiculous) option.

I've heard that 4-6 ounces of tomato juice daily (for the dog, not you :-) ) will help.

There are also supplements, but I've seen mixed reviews on their effectiveness.

Landscape an area with ivy or another type of ground cover and get your dog to go there. I know several people that have done this with great success.

The only way you can prevent it really is to create a dog run on your property. You can make it a fenced in area with gravel so you're not damaging your grass.

My sister bought a diet supplement for her dog and that helped. Don't know what it was called, but ask your vet or at the pet store.
