They wore bright red. Often a more 'orange' toned red due to the source of colour (cochineal) popular during the ration times of the war in the previous decade. Think of stars from the 50's - Marylin Monroe! Definately not plummy or 'blue' toned reds. Pillarbox is a favourite of mine! Oh - and never shiny. No gloss was around then, except perhaps vaseline, but no super high-glosses.

hope this helps

The lips were full with sharp peaks on the top lip. Apply foundation, then draw the top lip overdrawing the sharp peaks and the full bottom lip. Apply the lip color with the blunt tip. Bésame Red, Wild Orchid, Exotic Pink, Carmine, and Portrait Pink are all great 50s colors.

Matte reds and pinks. For similar colors, I would try www.besamecosmetics.com
as they specialize in retro-type cosmetics.

With a strong red you're all OK - and usually there was nothing else than red...
