Has anyone been to a Lowe's or Home Depot How-to-Clinic? Did you find the clinic useful? Was it hands on? Did you feel they taught you enough to do the job yourself? What type of clinic did you attend? Thanks.

Being an interior designer and very hands on, I've been to many of their how to clinics. I took basic wiring, basic plumbing, faux finishing, installing an attic & whole house fan, landscape planning, how to build a retaining wall, how to build a garden pathway, laying ceramic tile, using power tools, installing insulation and basic maintance for your new home. Mostly, I wanted to make sure that the contractors I hired knew what they were doing and what they told me was correct. But, I've learned a lot, made common mistakes and found that I could apply that knowledge in both my business and my home. I'm still not too comfortable with certain power tools, but can hold my own on most projects where I've used what they have taught me and it has saved me a lot of money of projects that I would have contracted out in my own home. The clinics also help you realize that there are things, like wiring and plumbing, that are best done by professional tradespeople. I think most of what they do for the inexperienced is build confidence.

A lot depends on the person teaching the clinic.

Many clinics are helpful, and will give you the basic understanding you need for a project. Attend them (most are free), ask questions, and don't be afraid of not getting it "right" the first time.

in our area, (NW Ohio), Lowes have much better clinics than Home Depot. In fact, their employees are much more helpful, in general.
