A plane is flying level at 2000ft above the ground.
The plane is carrying a 500lb.
From the time the bomb is released to the time the bomb hits
the ground how far has the bomb traveled horizontally?
Air resistance is not a factor the ground is level.
Please state the equation that you used that produced your answer.
Im playing a combat flight simulator game and trying to figure out how far back i need to be from my targets.

How fast is the plane traveling? To fall 2000ft at 32ft/sec^2 starting from a "standstill"
distance=2000ft
initial velocity=0ft/s
final velocity; unknown
acceleration=32ft/sec
time = want to find
the weight of the bomb is irrelevant--gravitational acceleration is constant
we have to solve 2000ft + 0 ft/s *s -32ft/s^2 *s^2 = 0, I think
s^2 = 125/2
thus it takes 7.9 seconds approximately to hit the ground (d=at^2; thus d/a = t^2)
to find the distance, multiply the plane's horizontal velocity by the time to impact.

Use the four equations at the top of the page.

Work out the final velocity vf from the bottom left equation
rearrange the bottom right equation to get 't' as the subject
use vf calculated and work out time.

Then you need the velocity of the plane.

And the distance is simply

Distance = Velocity of plane * time

The really weird part is that without air reistance the the bomb travels at the same horizontal speed as when it left the plane!

Weight of the bomb has nothing to do with how fast it falls because there is no air resistance.

a = 9.81 m/s^2 and is the acceleration due to gravity

You will need to know the horizontal velocity of the plane that released the bomb. Then determine the time it takes for the bomb to fall the vertical 2000 ft. Use velocity and time to calculate horizontal distance.

Please do not operate these plane's while under the influence of gravity. You need to wait at least 1 hour per each unit of gravity for your body to consume it.
